Challenge

The CNA old smart TV application was not reflecting the the brand essence. Moreover, the application wasn’t meeting the modern UX and UI requirements and was found difficult to use by its viewers. To increase the quality of user experience, the Customer wanted to explore a new TV app concept to be developed for three major smart TV platforms Android TV, Tizen and WebOS.

The goals were as follows:

  • Include OTT content in an easy to use and engaging way, increase the TV app’s viewership and viewers retention, integrate analytics for content engagement research.
  • Expand to Android TV system and all of the TV sets and boxes, utilizing these platforms and working closely with smart TV producers to fulfill the TV preload agreements.
  • Present the latest Breaking News, latest headlines, and daily articles, as well as movies for Channel News Asia, an English language TV news channel based in Singapore. (Mediacorp TV group).

Solution

This application has been deployed to a TV device. Once it’s turned on, it uses a web service to get its metadata and a CDN repository to play video and audio content. The framework uses a Model View Controller architecture to provide for a clean separation of the HTML5 code from the JavaScript code. The development technology for this application was the creation of a Single Page Application in HTML5 and JavaScript/Typescript/CSS3 and REST-API backend. HLS video streaming technology for live streams has also been used.

Results

Our customer has received full access to the source code and all the necessary documentation to allow it to further outsource the maintenance of the application, if it finds such outsourcing necessary. During the software development process, we stabilized the environment, enabling the testing of old versions of TV system software on LG and Samsung receivers. As a result, the stabilization period of the new software after its introduction into production proceeded flawlessly, and we achieved high satisfaction from the Client/Contractor.
